Bead Frame Counting

In the primary unit with Carla and Kris this week, the students have been introduced to the small bead frame. Many people know this as a type of abacus.  To give you a bit of history, an abacus is a counting and calculation tool. It has withstood the test of time and is still to be found on the desks and in the homes of people the world over.

With the Montessori small bead frame, the students count up to 10,000.  The students are trading ones for tens, tens for hundreds, and hundreds to thousands. Until they reach 10,000. The students love the big numbers!
