SOAR kicks off with a Saturday hike

Spring is here and so is MMS’s favorite Spring activity: SOAR!

SOAR stands for Students Outside Active and Running, and is a way to promote exercise and love of the outdoors, along with providing a community service.

This weekend we kicked off our SOAR program with a special 3 mile hike and optional additional 3 mile run. On Monday students began running at school. The students spend four weeks running a course around the playground at their lunch recess, keeping track of their distance. There are mini-incentives for various milestones that are fun for the students, including “feet” for each mile and small crafts/toys. The kids run off a lot of their extra springtime energy and we find we have happier, kinder, more attentive kids in and out of the classroom.

There is also a community service aspect of SOAR. The students raise money for each mile they run to donate to Oxford’s Community Choice Food Pantry. Last year the kids ran for a total of 1,045.5 miles and we raised/donated $2,361.63.

We’d like to give a special shout-out to parents who have already volunteered to help punching cards, keeping kids on the path, and cheering them along. The program relies on volunteers to keep it running smoothly.
