Problem Solving and 5/6

5th and 6th graders have finished with their introductory work on Problem Solving.  We will continue to use, discuss, and expand on these concepts through out the year.

This week, we will begin a unit on fractions.  5th graders will be looking first at finding fractional parts of a collection and equivalent fractions.  6th graders will begin with a review of equivalent fractions and move on to mixed numbers and comparing fractions.

In our work with fractions, we will be using Fraction Squares, Fractions Circles, Fraction Towers and other manipulatives.  Students seem to agree that the manipulatives are helpful in their ability to visualize and solve problems. – Marcia McIntosh
