Primary Unit: Math Journaling

The Primary Unit, with Carla and Kris, has been focusing on math journaling. Journaling is a large part of the day in the lower elementary class in Montessori. It is used so the children can reflect on one of the “math works” that have been taught with pictures and words. Putting thoughts into words help the students to clarify their thinking.

Math journaling is a great way to get insight into the students’ thoughts about math. This helps the teacher to also gain understanding of what the students were thinking when they did the activity. Each time a student completes a “math work”, he/she must write in their math journal. The students have written about patterning, 3D shapes, measurement, and sorting.
