Lower Elementary students have begun their study of Physical Geography, starting with the hydrosphere. The hydrosphere is the combined mass of water found on, under, and over our planet’s surface, and includes not only bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, rivers, streams, but also clouds, groundwater, and polar icecaps.

Students started by learning about the etymology of the word “hydrosphere” (hydro = water; sphere = a round surface), and then learned about all of the different parts and sources of water that make up our earth’s hydrosphere. Following this presentation, students began working independently with sets of cards that depict various types of bodies of water, choosing one card to reproduce themselves, drawing and coloring it on a blank piece of paper and labeling it with the correct terminology.

Some students are also working with World Atlases to find and trace all of the waterways in a chosen region. Students who complete this activity will then turn their work into a poster, adding additional information and facts about the waterways they have chosen and about how such sources of water interact with the rest of the hydrosphere.
