Because of our proximity to Miami University, we are fortunate to have access to some of their fantastic facilities. As part of our physical education program, the whole school goes skating for five Fridays every winter. These sessions serve a dual purpose in our curriculum.
First, every student, regardless of ability, has a chance to skate in a supportive environment. Beginning skaters learn the basics, while more advanced skaters can hone their skills. Many of our students are involved in the local skating programs: Learn to Skate, The Junior Redhawks and the The Oxford Skating Club outside of school.
The second aspect of our skating program is that it is an integral part of community building. Older students help younger ones tie skates and hold their hands as they make their way around the ice. More proficient skaters fetch buckets for beginners, and provide tips for standing (and falling). It is an opportunity for us to work together as a group, ensuring each child has the best experience possible.
While these skating sessions are not open to the public, parents and siblings are welcome to attend! Our remaining skating dates are 2/4, 2/11, and 2/25. We missed our first skating date sue to a snow day, so stay tuned for rescheduling information.
