Today is Pi Day, a holiday commemorating the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is celebrated each year on March 14 (3.14 in numerical date format). At McGuffey we celebrated on Friday, as our upper unit is gone to Model UN today.
In celebration, we found round objects around the school, we read stories (Sir Cumference and The Dragon of Pi), made a paper chain to using different colors to represent the digits of pi—ours was 500 digits long! The 3/4/5/8 graders had a contest to see who could memorize the most digits of pi. Winners will be announced next week! The 8th graders put on a short play, The Hidden Pi. Finally, we all got to eat pie—chocolate cream, apple, and lemon meringue. It was a fun and math filled afternoon for everyone.
