Estimation

Last week, the 5th and 6th graders started working on estimating. We discussed what an estimation is (and what it isn’t), when estimating is appropriate (and when it isn’t), and when one should over/under estimate.

There are several methods for estimating and the first one we looked at was Front-End Estimation with adjustment. At the beginning of each class, we have a short discussion/activity related to estimating. Then we move on to a demonstration of a new technique.

Estimation is an important skill and has often not been included in mathematics curriculum. We will eventually include estimating area, volume, and distances. These parts of the unit will necessitate a more hands on approach.
