Setting Up Your Employment

Welcome to the staff of McGuffey Montessori School!

If you are on this page it means we have offered you a position on our staff. We are so glad to have you join our learning community.

Things to do before your first day:

1.  Complete ALL of the following forms.
You should be able to add text to these PDFs and email them to Nancy. A few forms will need to be printed so you can sign them. If you need the office to print these for you, just let us know.

2. Background Checks
If you already have a background check, please get a copy to us prior to your first day of work. For us, background checks are valid for five years. Most education majors at Miami have a background check done annually. Simply ask Miami to send us copies.

If you do not have a current background check, please keep reading:

  • If you have lived in Ohio for the last five years, you only need to have an FBI background check completed.
  • There are two different types of background checks—BCI (which is the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation) and the FBI. Both background forms look identical except for “BCI” ad “FBI” in one place on the forms.
  • If you had a background check done for your Ohio teaching license (even for substitute teaching), we can look up the date online.
  • If you need a background check for the Ohio Department of Education, they must receive it directly from the Attorney General’s Office which means you need to check the ODE box on the form, in addition to having a copy sent to McGuffey.

To obtain a background check, go to the Miami University Police station on Route 73, next to Ditmer Parking Lot. Complete and print the Background Check Form, pre-filled out with McGuffey’s mailing address.

An FBI background check is $36. Both BCI (Ohio) and FBI costs $60. McGuffey will pay for background checks for full-time staff. For part-time staff we will pay for half. Please see the office ahead of time for a check made payable to Miami Police or get a receipt for reimbursement. Background checks are typically mailed to the school within ten business days.

3. Reading
Employee Handbook, note especially our Code of Conduct on Page XX (COMING SOON).

4. Active Shooter Training

FEMA/ready.gov has an active shooter training program online.
  • There is a video on YouTube with basic information that is dramatic but not over the top and has good reminders. It is an office based situation.
  • Please read this PDF of an information sheet and other links to resources
This free YouTube video was recommended for a school specific setting.

5. Pre-Service Orientation Training for Preschool and SACC Staff Members

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) orientation training for preschool and SACC staff members is now available. As a reminder, all new staff used in ratio must complete the online training within 30 days of hire. If an individual has already completed the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) Orientation it is not necessary to complete ODE’s version. In addition, should a staff member move to another program after completing the orientation and is within five years of completion, it is not necessary to repeat the orientation.

The orientation is online and may be accessed through the Ohio Professional Registry (OPR) housed at the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association (OCCRRA). OCCRA provides statewide coordination of professional development, training and technical assistance services for early learning and afterschool programs and professionals.

If they have not already done so, program staff members must create a profile in the registry to access the orientation. Please visit https://www.occrra.org/and click on the “Manage your Profile” tab on the homepage and follow the steps to create a profile. Also, located on the homepage is the “Search for Trainings” tab which explains how to search for trainings and houses the instructions for registering for trainings.

The orientation is entitled Orientation Training for Preschool and SACC Staff Members, ST10063312 and contains 8 modules. Each module is a self-contained unit that includes activities to complete and a quiz at the end. Once all 8 modules are completed, participants will be able to print a certificate of completion. Instructions on how to print the certificate are included in the training. The orientation may be completed in one sitting or taken over several days. The Office of Early Learning and School Readiness (OELSR) will grant up to 6 hours of in-service credit upon completion.

Completion of the training will automatically be noted in the participant’s profile in the Registry. Please allow up to 24 hours for the completion to be auto-populated.
