Today was Ben’s last day with us. Tomorrow he will board a plane to New York City with a few suitcases to start an internship at Global Health Corps. Global Health Corps works on issues of healthy equity, an area that has drawn Ben for some time.
Last summer, Ben came to us as an “intern”, offering us some of his time between graduation from Miami and waiting for his next life step to become more clear. As an alumni, he has had a special connection to both the school’s past and the school’s potential. He applied his wide skills in helping us with some really tricky issues over this year and rose to every challenge offered between power washing the pavilion floor for a town meeting to updating our crisis plan to organizing field trips. It was a pivotal year to have his expertise and heart.
Late last fall, he stepped up to coordinate Extended Care, taking over several mornings a week of Early Care and staying almost every day for Extended Day. Through this extra time with our students, he has forged confidence and special friendships with so many of our children.
While it is a bit hard for us to imagine McGuffey without him, we know that he will always be connected to McGuffey’s past, present and future. We can’t wait to hear about all the great things Ben will do and become. We think that Ben will take McGuffey with him wherever he goes and we know that McGuffey will forever be a better place for his time here.
