Primary and secondary colors

As we continue to talk about different forms of art in the classroom, we’re taking some time to explore color. Today we talked about primary and secondary colors. One way for children to truly understand this concept is to mix the colors themselves.

Today we introduced a work where children can create their own color wheel by placing droplets of color on a template. A child then mixes the droplets together, combining colors. Once the colors have been mixed, the child places a paper towel on top of the template, instantly creating their own color wheel!

The children are thrilled to be able to create this color magic all by themselves, and this work was in use non-stop since we introduced it this morning. Once children master this work, we’ll be introducing an even more complicated color wheel.
